Golf was a pastime developed over the past few years. There are few perks in teaching but one can be receiving acknowledgement from a group of colleagues who believe that you have made a valuable contribution.
When I left my last Headship I was presented with a comprehensive golfing kit. I had little option other than to take such a generous gift seriously!
Initially joined by my wife for lessons, we gradually learnt the art of hitting the ball. What a silly game it is! Take a long stick with a lump on the end and swing it to hit a small round ball - the aim to deposit the ball in a little hole.
Moving to Essex, it was some time before we revisited the game but following an unfortunate incident with a self-important female club member, my wife lost interest.
It was now down to Luke, my son-in-law, and me to pursue the ultimate goal of a handicap - an astute person invented this term. Eventually, we realised our ambition though playing so rarely, we fail to play at this level very consistently.
